Critical Reception[]

AllMusic's Thom Jurek wrote that Jackson "took his brand of new honky tonk country and pushed it all the way into the mainstream, making it possible for another batch of acts to follow him." He also praised the track, "Mercury Blues", saying that Jackson took the tune "back to its country roots and claiming it for the Fender Telecaster's particular brand of pinch and tang, Jackson sings the hell out of it."

Entertainment Weekly gave the album an "A", saying: "Jackson’s supple baritone may lack the distinctive tonal quality to be immediately recognizable, but with songs this good, you’ll surely remember who sang them."
