Critical Reception[]

Jose F. Promis from Allmusic described McKnight's album as a "mix of quiet storm and jazz-tinged R&B lite, with a few up-tempo numbers thrown in" and called it "a great album for a rainy winter afternoon."

Entertainment Weekly gave the album an "A", writing: "With its gently shifting moods and curvy melodies, the music on Brian McKnight is black pop suitable for framing. McKnight’s glowing tenor slides along song lines with heartfelt abandon, dominating gentle poems of love with a maturity that belies his 22 years." They also called McKnight "the most comforting R&B singer-songwriter to emerge since Keith Washington early last year."
