Album Background[]

Tori Kelly (known for being a secular pop musician) stated on an Instagram live chat that she initially planned on making the follow-up album to "Unbreakable Smile a pop album with only one gospel song.

She has stated before that she had no interest in being labeled a Christian artist even though some of her inspirations were Rachael Lampa and Crystal Lewis.

Kelly has stated that gospel had been an influence on her since childhood in an interview with Idolator: "I grew up on gospel music, I grew up singing it and a lot of what makes up gospel music is a huge influence in my own music. Growing up, I thought maybe one day I’ll do a gospel project."

Kelly co-wrote half of the album's songs with gospel musician Kirk Franklin.

The album title comes from Psalm 32:7: "You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with songs of deliverance."

Chart Performance[]

"Hiding Place" peaked at #35 on the Billboard 200 and topped Billboard's Top Gospel Albums chart.

Critical Reception[]

Matt Collar of Allmusic wrote that Kelly "delivers a joyful set of faith-based songs that balance contemporary gospel soulfulness with warm R&B hooks."

Kristin Smith of Plugged In wrote in her review of the album that Kelly's "sweet voice still matches her similarly sweet message as she recognizes that God is a refuge from the ups and downs of life."
