Rolling Stone's Jonathan Bernstein called it "a catchy treatise on the push and pull dynamics of a pop-leaning Southern singer trying to negotiate genres, styles, and sounds."

Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic described the album as filled with "bluntly candid confessions about universal emotions, all married to glistening pop productions where all the electronic elements (and there are many) are softened so they feel warm."
