Critical Reception[]

In his review of the album, Allmusic's Thom Owens wrote: "Stylistically, there isn't much difference between Long Stretch of Lonesome and her other records, but the key to its success is Loveless' unerring knack for picking the right material. Usually, contemporary country albums have a few hit singles surrounded by filler, but with any Loveless album, you can expect consistently excellent material, and this is no exception."

Entertainment Weekly gave the album an "A-", writing that the album "smartly explores near-existential concepts, from blind faith and romantic doubt to destiny and middle-age blahs."
