Critical Reception[]

Francis Davis from Rolling Stone gave the album a two-star rating, but called it a "distinct improvement over 1983’s What’s New."

Stephen Thomas Erlewine from AllMusic wrote: "Lush Life is just as effective as What's New, which means it's fine, but not as good as the real thing."

John Milward from USA Today said in his review of the album: "If there is any fault to be found with Lush Life, it is the uncomfortable element of retro-chic in the song selection."

Peter Reilly of Stereo Review wrote: "Ronstadt is so convincing in her attacks and performances that such memories recede after the first few bars. There is no nostalgia or gimmickry or retro cuteness to her work here. It is all just lovely music, beautifully performed for today's ears."
