Album BackgroundEdit

Jessie James Decker described the album to People magazine as a "full-circle" project that bridges that gap between the pop music influences of her debut and the country pop sound she has developed on previous releases, with songs that represent the "tremendous" changes in her life since her last full-length release.

The album contains a collaboration with country artist Randy Houser (who also co-wrote the single "My Cowboy" from Decker's debut album) which song she credits with helping her land her first record deal.

Chart PerformanceEdit

"Southern Girl City Lights" debuted at #18 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart with 21,000 album-equivalent units (of which 18,000 were traditional sales).

As of January 2018, the album has sold 31,200 copies in the United States.

Critical ReceptionEdit

Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic wrote that Decker "makes her artistic goal plain within the title for her second album, Southern Girl City Lights: she may be a country girl, but she's attracted to the bright lights of the big city. Such is the seduction of the big town that its pulsating synths and beats wind up overwhelming the country elements, but that's to the album's benefit, as it turns sleek and alluring."
