It was also the first Christmas album by a male artist to debut at number-one.
Bieber also became the first solo artist to have three number-one albums before his 18th birthday. For all of 2011, the album totaled 1,245,000 copies in US sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and was the eleventh best-selling album of the year.
As of December 2015, "Under the Mistletoe" had sold 1,510,000 copies in the United States. The album also debuted within the top 10 in Spain, Australia, Norway, and the Netherlands.
Allmusic wrote that "Bieber definitely sounds more enthused by the original songs--some of which resemble everyday numbers with patched-on seasonal references--and a cover of Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" (featuring Carey herself). The versions of holiday staples are pulled off with varying results."
Entertainment Weekly wrote in their review of the album: "The Biebs' gentle set of gentile carols on Under the Mistletoe isn't coal-lump bad; it's more like a dorky sweater from Nana with a 20 in the pocket."
The New York Times wrote: "Mr. Bieber hasn't ever sounded this good. But even Mr. Harrell can't place Mr. Bieber on equal footing with some of his more accomplished guests."
